Argentina’s Carlos Reutemann was one of the 70’s/early 80’s most successful drivers, and on the wake of this success, other Argentines got opportunities in Formula 1. Zunino was one of those drivers. His Formula 2 career was less than stellar, although he did finish 2nd in an Argentine Temporada race in 1978. He then moved to the Aurora Formula 1 championship, where he became a race winner. There was nothing in his curriculum that warranted his being hired by Brabham to replace the retiring Niki Lauda at the end of 1979. Even so he did well enough to finish 7th in Canada, and qualifying ninth in Watkins Glen, although he was obviously much slower than team leader Piquet. He remained in the Brabham camp in the early part of 1980, and then his shortcomings became all too clear. He posted another 7th place, in his home race at Argentina, but never qualified better than 16th, while team mate Piquet qualified and raced very competitively. The writing was on the wall, and after France, Zunino was dropped by the team, replaced by another luminary, Rebaque! He managed to squeeze in the Tyrrell team for a couple more starts in 1981. Curiously, he qualified 24th and finished 13th in both races.
