Understanding Baghetti’s Formula 1 career is at best puzzling. Here is a man who won his first Championship formula 1 race, the only one to do that, starting from twelfth on the grid, and driving a car that was, at least in name, entered by a privateer. If this were not enough, he had also won his first non-championship Formula 1 race!  Yet, thereafter he managed to score only an additional 5 points in a career that spanned 6 seasons. It is true that Baghetti drove the absolutely best Formula 1 car of 1961, the sharknose Ferrari, with which he also managed to score a fastest lap in that year’s Italian Grand Prix, and that he spent the rest of his career mostly driving bad cars, including the disastrous ATS. However, he never even came close to showing the form of those early races in his 18 other F1 starts. So after that excellent start, Baghetti was hired by the works proper in 1962, but by them the sharknose had been totally overcome by the British opposition. Some Ferrari personnel, including Carlo Chiti and Phil Hill, decided to abandon the Pracing Horse’s ship for 1963, and start a team from scratch, that would be called ATS (not to be confused with Gunther Schmidt’s ATS of the 70’s/80’s). Sadly for Baghetti he was also compelled to join the outfit, which had a proprietary engine. The team was one of the major fiascos of Formula 1 racing, essentially destroying Phil Hill’s career, and Baghetti’s as well. The best result Giancarlo got with the atrocious ATS was 15th at Monza. So it was not surprising that the team did not survive the season, leaving Baghetti a free agent for 1964. Thus he joined Scuderia Centro Sud, a traditional privateer, who were fielding BRM’s that year. Baghetti finished 7th in the Austrian GP, and 8th in Belgium and Italy, thus scoring no points. Obviously on the strength of his 1961 performance, he drove a Brabham works car in the 1965 Italian GP, retiring. His only 1966 start was again in the Italian GP, where he was originally slated to drive a 2.0 Lotus BRM, entered by Reg Parnell. When that car’s engine malfunctioned in practice, he was then lent a Ferrari Dino by the works, finishing 9 laps behind the winner, thus failing to be classified. His last F1 race took place in 1967, and for a change he had a competitive mount, a third Lotus 49 equipped with the new Cosworth engine. Even so Baghetti qualified next to last and retired from the race, thus bringing to a close his top flight career. He continued racing wherever he could, including downgrading to Formula 3, eventually becoming a photo journalist and leaving the race tracks for good.
